The Holy Apostles Peter and Paul

Today the Church celebrates the memory of Sts. Peter and Paul, the prime Apostles. Why does the Church celebrate them together? According to St. Augustine it is because,

Both apostles share the same feast day, for these two were one; and even though they suffered on different days, they were as one. Peter went first, and Paul followed. And so we celebrate this day made holy for us by the apostles’ blood. Let us embrace what they believed, their life, their labors, their sufferings, their preaching and their confession of faith.

May we follow the  confession of faith that Sts. Peter and Paul preached and suffered for. Through their prayers, Lord Jesus Christ our God, have mercy on us and save us. Amen

On Pride in Prayer

If you become proud when you receive what you ask in prayer, then it is obvious that your prayer was not to God, and you did not receive help from Him, but the demons were working with you in order to exalt your heart; For when help is given from God, the soul is not exalted, but is all the more humbled, and she is amazed at the great mercy of God, how merciful He is to sinners.

The monastic life is a model for human society. Neither democracy, nor monarchy, nor socialism can have this perfection. No system attains to the perfection of the monastic way of life, because it is truly angelic society. One could also call it a truly “patristic”society, because it is the way which the Fathers the Church lived. And marriage too, along with our relations with our neighbor, are also part of this mystery.
